Road accidents are being recognized as the biggest disaster in Sri Lanka, and it has caused to destroy valuable human lives, public and private properties and affects social harmony among people.Poor development of road infrastructure and increase of the vehicular population have become the major factors for this circumstance. In 2013 Sri Lanka's total vehicular population was about 5,203,678, and motorcycles take up about 52# of them.On the other hand there was 16# of motor tricycles and 10# of cars, and this situation clearly shows that Sri Lanka needs to pay its high attention on safety of motorcyclists. But unfortunately it has met about 16,500 accidents with motor cycles and 10,000 with three-wheelers out of the 61,500 in 2012.In Sri Lanka many motorcycle accidents were caused by speed combined with fatigue, reckless driving and speeding on wet road.A considerable number of motorcycle accidents have happened may be due to poor maintenance of vehicles, slow moving vehicles, unnecessary overtaking and monotony of landscape including poor road designs.Although, roads in Sri Lanka are developed rapidly, poor attention has beenpaid on motorcyclists, cyclists, three-wheelers and pedestrians. This could be recognized as a major cause for accidents, and therefore, road infrastructure development should be done considering all types of road users. In Sri Lanka, usually road accident data based on police injury records are probably inadequate and insufficient due largely to under reporting. However this paper will not aim to collect secondary data and to make analysis. The main objective of this paper is to recognize possible solutions to mitigate motorcycle accidents and damages in Sri Lanka. An experts' opinion survey and an injured motorcyclists interview surveys will be done to recognize possible and appropriate solutions. Conclusions will be made based on statistics of these two surveys. |
