A series of full scale vehicle impact tests on bridge parapets and roadside barriers have been carried out involving the impact of cars, trucks and buses on low to high containment level safety barriers, to check against the dynamic performance of these safety barriers.The performance requirement in the international standards have been used to evaluate the testing results, and finite element models of vehicles and safety barriers have been created and correlated with the full scale test results to simulate the whole impact process dynamically.With the dynamic simulation technique and the correlated FE models further modified for different types of safety barriers and impact scenarios, both the strength design and performance of the safety barriers can be designed in a cost-effective way, which is extremely useful for checking various options of a new design. |
