摘要:   Based on cellular handoff probe technology, this paper conducts a statistical analysis to find out characteristics of samples for freeway traffic state estimation.Data are collected from a segment of major freeway corridor in Jiangsu, China.First, measurements from cellular handoff probe system and microwave sensors which are regarded as the "ground truth" are transformed to uniform space-mean speeds.Second, temporal and spatial characteristics are summarized and it indicated that samples integrated by 15 minutes could produce better temporal and spatial coverage comparatively.Then correlation analysis between sample size and relative error is following up.Apparently, large sample size could achieve stable and high system accuracy.Finally, three variables including length of handoff link, traffic volume, traffic speed, which might have an influence on sample size are evaluated.Generally, shorter handoff link, high traffic volume and free-flow traffic speed are helpful to produce more samples.
