摘要:   In this work we present a failure investigation on turbine housing used in automotive diesel turbocharged engine which had run about 50, 300 km, while the expected life was 100, 000 km. The turbine housing which was made of ductile iron with high sili- con and molybdenum element to promote specific properties had penetrated crack that led to engine performance drop. The crack root cause identification was carried out through chemical analysis, finite element analysis, casting simulation and residual stress measure- ment. The chemical composition results complied with the design specification and hardness testing results were in accordance with the minimum hardness requirement. The finite element analysis also showed the cracking location had no plastic strain which stated the failure was not from severe engine duty cycle. While the casting simulation showed the failure was triggered by big casting residual stress. A sub- sequent residual stress measurement identified the failure root cause as well. The overall results indicated that an improved pouring system was needed to reduce casting residual stress and prevent same failure.
