This project will develop and test a system to enable access to relevant transit information to all passengers, including passengers with visual or cognitive impairments. Passengers with visual or cognitive disabilities face challenges when using public transportation. With the proposed system, passengers will be able to access personalized, real-time transit information through their cell phone. This information will be provided by Bluetooth beacons (termed info-beacons) placed at bus stations and on buses. The proposed info-beacons will transmit information that is already currently posted (in printed form or through audible and textual displays), but cannot be accessed by persons who have sensory or cognitive impairments. With the proposed system, this information will be made available to all passengers in their preferred format. The project investigators will collaborate with the Transportation & Parking Services group that operates buses at the University of California, Santa Cruz, who will participate in this project. The prototype system will be deployed and tested on one of their buses and in two bus stations on campus. |
