Building out of congestion is no longer an option; transportation agencies must coordinate the way to improved performance. Connected Corridors is therefore investigating how the component systems of a transportation corridor (freeways, arterial city streets, buses, rail lines, freight, etc.) can be operated together efficiently so they can be managed as a cohesive, integrated system, to reduce traffic congestion and improve mobility along the corridor. This project will develop and test a framework for corridor traffic operations in California in general and on a 20 mile segment of I-210 in particular. Connected Corridors will leverage new technologies such as the Internet, cellular communications, global positioning system (GPS) navigation and adaptive traffic control combined with current corridor management strategies such as ramp metering, lane management, dynamic shoulder use, and arterial signal coordination, to help both traffic managers and travelers make optimal use of the transportation network. Project goals include improving travel time reliability; improving traveler information, mobility, and safety; reducing congestion and increasing throughput; and incorporating transit and multimodal travel in the corridor. |
