Iowa State University's (ISU) Institute for Transportation (InTrans) plans to partner with the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) to develop and offer transportation training for K -12 educators in Iowa. Education is a key element of the activities conducted by InTrans for the Midwest Transportation Center (MTC), and this partnership will be valuable for both parties. The purpose of these partnerships is to twofold: (1) to introduce Iowa K -12 educators to the working world of transportation and civil engineering and inspire them to share careers in those fields with their students; (2) to expose educators to hands-on inquiry-based Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) activities that address real-world issues to ensure that the next generation of students is scientifically literate and equipped to fill the needs of the 21 st century workforce. The objective of the InTrans-DOT education collaboration is to offer a summer learning experience, in the form of a one-week workshop, for 10 Iowa K -12 educators. The goal is to support educator learning by relating and applying current practices in transportation to STEM content and concepts required by the Iowa Core Curriculum. A major focus of the workshop will be to provide hands-on inquiry based activities associated with transportation that can be used in K-12 classrooms. Additionally, InTrans will provide engineers (volunteers) to serve as speakers, develop relevant hands-on activities, and/or talk to educators about the importance of math and science in preparing for their future. The project start-up is estimated to take approximately three months of development and an additional seven months for implementation and evaluation |
