The proposed study seeks to investigate key engineering and structural properties of fiber-reinforced self-consolidating concrete (FR-SCC) and fiber-reinforced super workable concrete (FR-SWC) for infrastructure repair and construction. FR-SCC is targeted for repair of sub-structure elements, while the FR-SWC is targeted for construction operations. The FR-SWC requires some consolidation and can be used in less congested structural elements where this consolidation with SCC or FR-SCC is not required. The FR-SWC is easier to produce than FR-SCC and is more cost-effective for use in infrastructure construction. However, the FR-SWC is not adequate for repair applications that often involve casting concrete in restricted spacing necessitating self-consolidation characteristics. FR-SWC can be used in precast as well as cast-in-place girders, cast-in-place piers and piles, and other bridge elements, including abutment walls. In this investigation, several types of fibers will be investigated to select FR-SCC and FR-SWC that can yield superior performance. The expected result from this study will be guidelines and performance-based specifications for the evaluation, selection, and specification of FR-SCC for infrastructure repair of bridge sub-structures and FR-SWC for the construction of bridge substructure and superstructure elements. |
