Scour during flooding events can occur around bridge piers when the hydraulic erosive action of the river flows exceeds the erosion resistance of the bed sediment. The resulting loss of soil leads to reductions in foundation bearing capacity and pier and abutment settlements, endangering bridge stability and limiting serviceability. Hydraulic- and bridge scour-related failures are by far the leading cause of bridge failure nationwide. Risk assessment in scenarios where scour does occur, either during or after flooding events, requires assessment of scour hole depth in the bed adjacent to bridge piers. The objective of this research is to provide a literature review on current practices for inspecting scour critical bridges during and after triggering flood events. This will comprise describing (a) current (and considered) practices at other departments of transportation, (b) state-of-the-art practices in scour monitoring, and (c) applicability of different approaches to the particular conditions relevant to bridges in Illinois. In accomplishing this, the research team will provide insight into the available approaches that could be considered for scour monitoring and methods that are most applicable to monitoring bridges in Illinois both during and after flood events. |
