Transportation agencies strive to ensure the safety and mobility of motorists, as well as the safety of workers, in highway construction work zones. In an effort to enhance safety and mobility, ADOT is implementing its first-ever dynamic lane merge smart work zone (SWZ) as part of the bridge decks rehabilitation project on Interstate 40 (I-40) between Milepost 230.45 and Milepost 233.70. ADOT installed the SWZ in the westbound direction and a traditional work zone in the eastbound direction. Sensors were installed in both directions to collect data on vehicle speeds through the work zones.
ADOT is interested in evaluating the SWZ to better understand the potential impact on the type, location, and severity of crashes, as well as on congestion and mobility, in the work zones. Data on vehicle speeds and crashes collected from both the SWZ and the traditional work zone will enable a comparative analysis that will inform decisions regarding future construction work zones. |
