This research addresses the PacTrans topics of traffic safety by investigating total operating cost of safety rest areas in Washington state and comparing it with other states. This will be one of the important steps towards adopting cost effective method in operating safety rest areas in Washington.
Safety rest areas reduce drowsiness, distracted driving, and unsafe/illegal parking along the roadside (Caltrans 2020). Safety rest areas are one of the tools to keep highway users safe and help them arrive at their destinations safe. Several states, Georgia, Virginia, Arizona, New Mexico, Louisiana, closed many safety rest areas to
save their maintenance cost due to budget limitation. Therefore, the operation cost of safety rest areas became a concern for states.
How to maintain safety rest areas cost effectively while providing for road
users’ needs is a looming major challenge for today. The principal objective of this study is to compute the unit operating costs of Washington safety rest areas and compare them with other states.
With this comparison, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) may have an opportunity to know if they are operating the safety Rest Area cost effectively. |
