The Volpe National Transportation Systems Center (Volpe Center) supports the Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Office of Drug and Alcohol Policy and Compliance (ODAPC) in their efforts to further reduce and detect alcohol impairment. Countermeasure support includes the development and evaluation of measurement techniques for alcohol in the breath, the development of performance criteria in the form of model specifications for breath alcohol measurement devices, testing of instruments intended for use by law enforcement, technical support of demonstration and research programs, and support of the ODAPC employee testing programs. The laboratory capability and expertise established at the Volpe Center also supports development and evaluation of test procedures and related instrumentation that measure alcohol from other bodily fluids to meet the evolving needs of Alcohol Countermeasure Programs. Volpe will implement instrument testing to NHTSA Model Specifications and provide support to Federal Alcohol Programs and State Alcohol Programs, research programs, and interlock programs. |
