The article explores and explains the evolution of Swedish railway reforms and its effects, with some emphasis on the vertical separation and regionalisation that initiated the reform process. It is argued that vertical separation in the Swedish context provided more transparency of public funding, sparking an increase in infrastructure expenditure. A strong growth in demand and several other positive effects can be observed, but there are currently also a number of issues to be resolved. A current Government Committee is expected to come up with suggestions on improvements. |
