The Fiber Optic Association (FOA) is meeting with numerous broadband groups mobilizing to participate in the federal Broadband Equity Access and Deployment (BEAD) program funding for underserved and unserved areas. While the FOA's main contribution to these groups is workforce development, we also learn a lot about how each group sees the network in their region. Suppose I tried to summarize the information we have gathered. In that case, I'd say that much of what people understand about communications networks today is based on telephone networks of a half-century or more ago. That's when most communications networks were monopolies, wires were copper, and most were installed on poles. That's not the best model for today, and especially not the best model for a network built to last another 40 years. Today, we have a competitive environment in many areas where communications travel over fiber optics or radio waves and most cables are underground. In addition, data, not voice, is the service to prioritize, and data traffic continues to grow quickly. Who can guess what communications networks will look like in 40 years or where population shifts require connectivity? |
