s an important part of providing safe, economically affordable, accessible and sustainable transport systems for all, major investments have been made throughout the country to increase cycling, all year-round. However, since single bicycle accidents often occur due to skidding on ice, snow or gravel, a higher winter maintenance service level is needed. A growing number of municipalities therefore use sweep-salting that does not involve gravel but salt for anti-icing. There is a great potential for improvement of the method, not least to ensure environmental sustainability. The thirty municipalities that currently use the method can be regarded as a number of full-scale trials, but due to the lack of operational recommendations and uniform monitoring systems, their experience will not benefit other road owners. The Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI) delivers scientifically based operating instructions and a salt template for sweep-salting, produced within the framework of an ongoing research project (VINNOVA) in collaboration with Karlstad Municipality before the winter season 2019/20. Within this FORMAS project, a user support is implemented for the operating instructions and the salt templates at the same time as the continuous experience feedback is secured. In addition, the sweep-salting method is further developed within the project, in collaboration between researchers and municipalities, in order to customize it to pedestrians and pavements. |
