摘要:Tim was one of the first people to extend himself as a coworker and a friend when I first arrived at Babcox Media. Here at Babcox, we all get a license plate with our name, start date and where we were born that hangs outside of our doors. I think what triggered our relationship was that I'm from Canton, Ohio, where Tim lived and went to college. At first, we talked about Heggy's Nut Shop, Milk and Honey Ice Cream and Master Pizza - all well-known places to anyone who was born, grew up or lived in Canton. We moved on to sports, guy stuff and what was happening in the world. It was easy to like Tim because he was a thoughtful, salt-of-the-earth person. Tim was a respected editor adept at providing resourceful content with a persistence for excellence, accuracy and integrity. He, in partnership with Editor Amy Antenora, would need all of these skills in putting out the aftermarketNews Daily e-newsletter. AMN, BodyShop Business' sister publication, is read by the automotive aftermarket.

摘要:Some collision repairers believe 2020 was the best thing that ever happened to them. Clay Hoberecht, for example, says 2020 "made" his shop. He finally had the time to bring the dream he had in his head for seven years to fruition. "I've had an idea of the workshop and of the workflow, what kind of booth I wanted, what kind of measuring system and triage area I wanted," he said. "As I've owned this business, I've become a student and learned about the different changes that are required as we're repairing vehicles. And so, I'm noticing the changes that are needing to happen, and 2020 actually gave us the opportunity to put those together." All the more reason there is a bright outlook on 2021 for the collision repair industry.

摘要:The bottom line is that you must understand who your true customer is. And, regardless of whether they use their insurance or another persons insurance or pay out of pocket, you must serve their needs by providing proper and thorough repairs that will protect their personal safety and economic well-being. Do not allow others to come between you and your customer with the intent to divide and conquer. There are repairers across the country who practice this level of service consistently, and while some insurers may not appreciate this approach, the repairer's customers and community members do. As a result, these shops have a huge following of happy customers who continually give them referrals. If you have not conducted business in this manner in the past, you should consider it as it is profitable and enjoyable and offers the feeling of pride and satisfaction - the kind of feelings that attracted you to the collision repair industry in the first place.

摘要:On behalf of the combined efforts from industry associations, collision repair professionals, scan tool providers and various subject matter experts, the Automotive Service Association (ASA), the Society of Collision Repair Specialists (SCRS) and the Alliance of Automotive Service Providers (AASP) acknowledge the act of scanning a vehicle using a qualified scan tool as a necessary and not-included operation that is legitimately expressed on a repair order with either a fixed cost, in labor hours and/or set dollar amount. All other procedures necessary to correctly and safely identify and address a vehicle's electronic system faults or diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) are considered additional operations and not included in the scanning operation. This includes but is not limited to: 1.Prepping the vehicle for a scan 2.Researching, verifying and documenting manufacturers' data.

摘要:I'm now going to say something that many of you will not like: as an industry, we're still missing so many procedures that are supposed to be done to correctly repair the vehicle. Until you know during blueprinting what procedures you need to perform and how often to complete repairs, you will not know what software or scan tools you need. The flip side of this statement is the liability of not completing all repairs. Giving back an impaired vehicle is not what we're about. Know your responsibility and research your vehicles. The plan: identify what you need versus what you want. Plan to adapt for the rest. Don't be the squirrel on the roadway. Right or wrong, move.

摘要:You've probably heard that electric cars are coming? They're going to have even more plastic parts to reduce weight and cost, and it's especially important on electric cars because the lighter the weight, the greater the range. As an example, the upcoming Aptera electric car weighs 2,200 lbs. versus the Mini E at 3,150 lbs. With the same 35kWH battery on the Mini, the Aptera will go 350 miles and the Mini will only go 150 miles. That's a 133% improvement in range for a 43% reduction in weight. Admittedly, aerodynamics also has a large influence - the Aptera looks like an alien pod whereas the Mini looks like an actual car with room for four (barely...I'm 6-foot-3 so I'm not sitting in back!). But weight is a huge influence because it takes energy to accelerate that additional mass every time the light turns green. The bottom line is that plastics aren't going away, and if you repair collision-damaged vehicles, you're going to have several - if not dozens of- damaged plastic parts on each vehicle you repair.

摘要:I've been reading lots of articles lately on how the pandemic has changed workers. The increased time at home with family has made them reexamine their priorities. The flexibility inherent in "working from home" is something they now still want even as they're being called back into the office. As a result, some are quitting their old jobs and getting new ones. Some are even completely switching careers. They're putting their foot down after years of "corporate profit taking" and stagnant wages; it's as if the pandemic empowered employees and put the shoe on the other foot.

摘要:To follow up on my post from yesterday, let me ask you this: let's say this was my Lexus SUV and I wanted to get insurance quotes. I picked the exact same deductibles, same coverages and same policy limits with 10 companies. When I got back their monthly premium bids, would they all be the exact same? Why wouldn't they be, it's all the same coverage? Of course not! Just because a business is considered a 'body shop' doesn't mean it should all be paid the same rate. My wife can open a body shop today at a closed-down Blockbuster video store and insurance companies will want to pay her the exact same they pay me to install a BMW quarter panel. It doesn't matter that she has never fixed a car, has no tools, no training, no certifications, but she's a 'body shop.' Yet when our shop that has spent hundreds of thousands on all those items demands a higher rate, we're labeled as difficult to work with. Anyone else see the major dilemma here? Just food for thought on this Wednesday morning. For that reason, our team will always fight to be paid for what we are worth and we will not apologize for it.
