Transportation acts as a lifeline for cities all over the world. Greater Mumbai is one of the metropolitan cities of India. The usage of personal vehicles is increasing which is leading to heavy congestion on roads, increase in energy demand and environmental emissions. This paper projects Energy Demand (ED) and Environmental Emissions (EE) in business-as-usual (BA U) and in alternative scenarios with different growth rates in case of Greater Mumbai. The results show that overall Energy Demand would increase from 37 Million GJ in 2010 to 109 Million GJ in 2030 which is almost threefold increase. In BAU, petrol demand will increase from 308 million litres in 2010 to 970 million litres in 2030, CNG demand will increase from 237 million Kgs. in 2010 to 645 million Kgs. in 2030 and diesel demand will increase from 370 million litres in 2010 to 1,084 million litres in 2030.
Energy demand and emissions in Greater Mumbai from transport sector would increase in optimistic economic growth scenario. This shows that in future there will be increase in number of vehicles, higher demand for petrol, diesel and CNG which may add to greater energy demand and environmental pollution in Greater Mumbai. Therefore, there is a need to act fast, promote policies and increase investment for modes of transport which would reduce energy consumption and emissions from transport sector in case of Greater Mumbai. |
