摘要: A sustainable transport network is environment friendly and consumes less energy. This paper attempts to test the hypothesis that the infrastructure investment, energy consumption and environmental emissions from transport systems are highly skewed towards motorised modes of transport largely catering for the travel needs of urban "nonpoor" commuters. The first part of the paper discusses the forecasted Energy Demand (ED), Environmental Emissions (EE) for business as usual and different economic growth rate scenarios for Greater Mumbai transport system. The second part of the paper addresses the equitability of transportation initiatives and investments with respect to energy conservation, environmental emissions and service provision among different sections of the society. By fallowing the classification of poor and non-poor commuters proposed by the World Bank, this paper attempts to delineate energy consumption and environmental emissions among the modes of transport used by poor and non-poor to establish the presence of inequity in energy consumption, environmental emissions vis-a-vis travel service provision in Greater Mumbai transport system. It further estimates the share of energy consumption and environmental emissions that could be avoided with the presence of non-motorised modes of transport (NMT) largely used by "poor" commuters. The results establish the fact that non-poor commuters consume more energy, emit more for the services offered (PKM) by the modes of transport they use. Therefore, there is need to promote and increase investment for modes of transport like NMT (walking and cycling) and public transport like bus which would reduce energy consumption and emissions from transport sector in case of Greater Mumbai.
