摘要：	The intra-city bus transport is provided by the State government in almost all major cities in India. Although, theoretically, the bus fare should depend on occupancy rate and average cost per kilometre on the basis of average cost pricing, practically the governments find it difficult to charge the appropriate price and make both ends meet. This is despite the reality that the occupancy is more than the number of seats in most of the cases. Given this scenario, is there any opportunity to improve the earning of the staterun transport corporations by innovative pricing, following the insights of economic theory? This paper looks at this aspect by looking at the reservation price of the passengers with certainty of seat. This paper first develops a theoretical model and establishes the hypothesis that certainty of seat increases the reservation price. This result is then verified by a primary survey which confirms in statistically significant manner that customers are willing to pay more money for the ticket if seat reservation is provided to them. This paper examines the role of seat reservation in intra-city bus transport with a higher price from the point of view of social welfare maximisation. For this purpose, the profit of the transport corporations and consumer surplus of different categories of customers are taken into account and the condition of Pareto optimality is explored.
