On May 28, 1998, the leaders of the National Capital Region came together to discuss their issues and concerns about transportation. As a follow up to this National Capital Region Congestion and Mobility Summit, Secretary of Transportation Rodney Slater started a process that would culminate in a Transportation Partnership Strategy for the region. This process that developed the Transportation Partnership Strategy continued the dialog that occurred at the summit and has been occurring in other forums. Secretary Slater established three goals for the process: first, to gain a deeper understanding of the congestion and mobility issues facing our region; second, to explore and assess the most effective options to address these issues; and, third, to develop a Transportation Partnership Strategy, based upon effective partnerships within the region. |
