This paper addresses the Advanced Driver Vehicle Navigation Concept (ADVANCE) project in metropolitan Chicago. The project consists of a traffic information center together with test vehicles equipped with a computer and a touch-sensitive color display. This paper specifically focuses on the traffic information center now being developed by the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) in cooperation with the other ADVANCE partners. The traffic information center is designed to receive data from up to 3,000 specially equipped vehicles through a two-way radio frequency (RF) cellular communications system. The center also receives data from in-pavement loop detectors and reliable voice reports. These data sources are fused together by specially designed algorithms to predict near-future traffic conditions. These predictions are then sent out to the specially equipped vehicles for use in dynamic route guidance. Hardware and software used in developing the traffic information are discussed. |
