This paper addresses the development of the Gary-Chicago-Milwaukee Corridor Transportation Information Center (C-TIC) and its transition to the Gateway Traveler Information System. The C-TIC results from recommendations based on the Gary-Chicago-Milwaukee Priority Corridor Plan. This Plan recommended a center to distribute information among the various traffic and transportation management centers in Milwaukee, Chicago and Northwest Indiana as well as with other private and PUB Published by: lic providers and users of transportation related data. This data includes real time information ranging from roadway travel times to roadway incidents to weather conditions to transit information. The C-TIC began with travel time information for Chicago area expressways available on Internet. Additional data sources such as construction/maintenance information, *999 (a cell phone based motorist aid system), Northwest Central Dispatch (a 911 CAD system), and MONITOR (the Milwaukee freeway management system) have now been added. The paper addresses the development of the Gateway, which is the follow-on to the C-TIC and will utilize many of the sources/connections the C-TIC is currently using. Additionally the paper addresses many of the issues that have arisen with emphasis on those that have a significance both within the GCM Corridor and elsewhere. These issues include those relating to use of the National Transportation Communications for ITS Protocols (NTCIP), the Location Referencing Management System (LRMS), data fusion/verification media/Information Service Provider (ISP) interface and historical data storage/archiving/distribution. |
