Initialization of the ADVANCE vehicle navigation and route guidance system requires estimates of link travel times by time periods during the 24-hour weekday. Links are defined in this system by turning movement for all street segments other than local streets. For this purpose, a detailed network representation and network flow model have been developed. The network representation includes about 20,000 turning-movement links. This network connects about 437 zones within the 300-square mile ADVANCE Test Area. The model is a general route choice (traffic assignment) model in which delays at signals are represented by functions drawn from recent advances in traffic engineering. The model is solved for 5 time periods during the day. |
