The 1995 American Travel Survey (ATS) is the first comprehensive survey of long-distance travel patterns in two decades. The survey provides detailed information about the characteristics of long-distance travel, including demographic information about the individuals and households who are traveling. It is, therefore, a useful resource for transportation planning purposes as well as travel market research. This paper describes the results of using the New England region as a case study in air travel market research. Air travel market classifications are developed from the ATS data. The characteristics of the resulting market segments are explored in detail using additional information from the survey database. Some of the characteristics of the air travel market for New England are also compared to survey data available for Boston's Logan International Airport, the principal airport in the region. |
