A new marina is the most relevant project within the developing plan for the coastal area of the Paola town, located along the Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria. The coast alignment is about 350癗 and the area is characterised by severe storm conditions and steep seabed. The design offshore significant wave conditions for NW sector are: Hs=10 m and Tp=14.2 s. The length of the main breakwater is about 800 m and it runs parallel to the coastline at a water depth from 6 to 9 meters. The marina includes nine floating pontoons for a total number of about 500 pleasure boats berths. Considering the very steep seabed and the critical storm conditions at the site the construction of a low crest breakwater armoured with Antifer cubes has been planned, with berthing not allowed behind the crest. A physical model study for the structural and functional assessment of the breakwater has been carried out. Tests for stability, overtopping and transmitted wave height evaluation were carried out on a scaled model of the breakwater main cross section. Runs simulating the evolution of the design storm allowed the comparison of alternative structure configurations with varying armour size, crest elevation and width, rear armour protection, seaward berm configuration and armour toe protection. |
