The paper describes the restoration by British Waterways of the world’s first boat lift, which is located at Anderton, near Northwich in Cheshire. The background to the project and the lift’s history is described, from its construction in 1875 to its conversion in 1908 and its closure in 1983. The recent history since closure leading up to the present site works is also covered. These historical aspects are fundamental to the appreciation of the restoration works. The main body of the report explains how the restoration works have been undertaken and also describes the project management approach to such a complex and difficult project. Finally the author’s conclusions elaborate and reflect on the overall construction and management approaches on what has, so far, been a very successful project. At the time of writing the restoration is substantially complete and only finishing works and commissioning remain up to the lift opening in Spring 2002. |
