Main objective of the INARTE project (Integration of Navigation and Anticollision for Rural Traffic Environment) is to increase traffic safety and driver comfort, on motorways, urban arterials and rural roads, by implementing a new generation, multi functional, advanced driver assistance system, which integrates the information from existing single functional systems such as navigation, anticollision radar and lane recognition camera. The digital map database, with high precision geometry, and additional attributes, is a key element for such integration. The new system enhances functionality and performance of existing systems by providing an extended and integrated view of the environment in front of the car, and by providing greater simplicity for the user through a single human machine interface. This paper gives a general description of the project, with special focus on system functionality, activation strategies and systems architecture. The project started 01 April 1998, and is EU funded in the 4th Framework Telematics Applications Programme. (A*) For the covering abstract see ITRD E110327. |
