摘要: Freeway incidents cost the United States over 100 million dollars each year, measured in wasted fuel, productivity loss, and air pollution. With increasing traffic congestion in the United States, many states have constructed transportation management centers to improve service vehicle response to incidents and decrease delays. The effectiveness of freeway incident management systems, commonly used throughout the United States and the world, depends upon both agency operating policies and system response strategies being implemented. To reduce incident response time, control strategies should be used to increase operational efficiency and traffic safety. This paper evaluates the effective usage of a speed-based incident detection algorithm for automatic incident detection. Using real-world traffic data collected from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) San Antonio TransGuide system, it examines the optimum moving average interval and threshold values in order to improve system responsiveness and reduce false alarms. The study found that the use of the simple speed-based incident detection algorithm works well based on the incident cases being evaluated for automatic incident detection assistance.
