The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) currently operates a Traffic Management System (TMS) in Northern Virginia (NOVA), one of the nation's most congested regions, covering several major highways in Fairfax and Arlington Counties. The TMS is a computerized highway surveillance and control system that currently monitors a combined distance of 30 miles along I-66, I-395, and a small portion of I-495 in the NOVA region. The VDOT TMS, one of our nation's first deployed freeway surveillance and control systems, has been operational since 1985 and has a demonstrated, proven track record of delivering benefits to the PUB Published by: lic. Due to the system's success, it is currently being expanded to increase coverage by 34.4 miles on I-66 and I-395/ I-95 in the NOVA region. As part of the system expansion, a new modern control room has been constructed, and the hardware and software used to drive the system will be replaced with new state-of- the-art technology. The new control room, called the "NOVA Smart Traffic Center," will seamlessly integrate existing and new field equipment, and will provide the decision support system for the operations and maintenance staff. This paper discusses the process used to implement the new system and will identify various lessons learned in the development process. In addition, this paper will provide insight into the system design and software prototypes to be used in this next-generation facility. |
