Interoperability between transportation devices is the prime service that will emerge with the National Transportation Communications for ITS Protocols, or NTCTP. NTCTP will help lead the way to achieve a cost effective deployment and the management of the ITS applications. It will also influence the design and the manufacturing process, and may cause changes in the way system integrators do their work. The paper reports on the development efforts and the implications of NTCIP and resulting interoperability for transportation applications. It describes the framework of the NTCIP and its relationships to the National ITS Architecture and states implied and real device level interoperability. The NTCIP makes an effort to fulfill the initial needs for interoperable and interchangeable field devices. This paper covers these aspects of ITS interoperability and reports on current developments based on the authors' direct involvement with the NTCIP standards making process. |
