This work is part of a larger study concerning consumer acceptance for ITS consumer products and services. "Intelligent" safety devices in private vehicles constitute an important set of ITS "consumer products." This paper concerns several such devices (or "crash avoidance countermeasures") that are currently in various stages of development. The following safety problems and the countermeasures under development to address them were studied: Rear object crashes (back-up warning devices); Run-off-the-road crashes (application of lane trackers); Lane change/merge crashes (application of side object detection systems); Rear-end crashes (application of front-object detection systems); Drowsy drivers (application of driver monitoring systems); Vision under degraded conditions, such as darkness, poor weather, or glare (vision enhancement systems); Intersection crashes; and Adaptive ("intelligent") cruise control. Eight focus groups were conducted in mid-1997 in four metropolitan areas (Boston, Fort Lauderdale, Los Angeles, and St Louis). |
