摘要: The Automated Highway System (AHS) is being designed to increase highway safety by automating most driving actions and thus most crashes. About 6% of the crashes on today's interstates, and even more for high-speed highways, are caused by obstacles in the road. There are two ways to eliminate accidents due to obstacles. One is to keep the obstacles off the road (obstacle prevention), and the other is to detect and safely react to obstacles as they occur (obstacle detection/avoidance). The automated highway will probably use a combination of these two techniques. This requires an understanding of the source and nature of highway obstacles that cause accidents. The AHS team undertook an analysis of obstacle data based on examination of the individual police reports that were used to assemble NHTSA's 1996 GES crash statistics. The remainder of the paper discusses the different causes of obstacle accidents, and the worst obstacle types.
