Pavements are the assets of any country. Pavements deteriorate over the period of time due to heavy traffic movement and variation in climatic conditions. Hence there is a need to preserve these assets in good condition, by providing maintenance derived from optimum rational strategies. Pavement evaluation is a key step in selecting deteriorated roads for maintenance. A case study on 6 State Highways of Karnataka, with a sample length of 27 km was considered to demonstrate the procedure for maintenance priority. Prioritization of selected stretch of roads for maintenance is carried out by implementing the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method. A total of five pavement distresses are selected as pavement maintenance factors in this study, namely cracking, raveling, pothole, edge break and rut depth. Weightage of each pavement maintenance factor is derived from the AHP method, through pair wise comparison matrix was built by considering the opinion of field engineers and teaching faculty. Then distress comprehensive index was calculated, which represents the maintenance priority of selected roads. Ranking of selected roads was given based on the value of distress comprehensive index. Higher the ranking, first preference is given for maintenance and lower the ranking, last preference is given for maintenance. |
