Use of high performance (high modulus) asphalt mixes across the world has gained a lot of attention due to its unique performance characteristics such as high stiffness, high durability, superior resistance to permanent deformation and good fatigue resistance. The French asphalt mix called Enrobe a Module Eleve (EME) also known as high modulus asphalt mix (HiMA) developed in the mid 1980's has been successfully used in countries like Australia, and South Africa apart from France as high-performance mix to meet the requirements of the ever-increasing tra ffic volumes. Use of HiMA mixes in bituminous base layer will help in the reduction of layer thickness due to higher modulus of mix than conventional mixes. Generally, these mixes are produced using hard grade bitumen and designed at lower air voids to incorporate more bitumen thus fatigue resistance of mixes will be increased. Overloading, high pavement temperatures and traffic volume (more than 150 msa) are some of the challenging issues of Indian highways and these issues can be addressed with the use of hard grade bitumen in bituminous base layer. There is an abundant scope for research in this direction and on various aspects such as development of hard grade bitumen, characterisation of high modulus asphalt mixes and development of design guidelines for Indian highways. Non availability of hard grade binder is concerned issue for the adoption of high modulus bituminous binders. In this regard, this paper discusses review of methodology of producing high modulus asphalt (HiMA) mixes. Studies considered for evaluating the suitability of various modifiers to produce HiMA binders and their laboratory and field performance are also discussed which could aid the current practicing pavement engineers and contractors in selecting the modification mechanism to adopt HiMA technology. It also raises the concept of blending the conventional bitumen with two or more modifiers to produce hard binder and thereby it is possible to produce HiMA mixes. |
