The Accrington Heritage Trust wants to raise £14,000 to restore an East Lancs-rebodied Leyland Leopard and paint it in traditional red, dark blue and black Hyndburn livery. The trust wants to use it as an educational tool to ensure that future generations are aware of the connection that links the livery of Accrington's municipal buses and trams with the locally recruited East Lancashire 11th Battalion, known popularly as the Accrington Pals, many of whom were killed or injured in the Battle of the Somme in July 1916. Black was added to the livery and the crews' uniforms to commemorate their loss in action. |
