With the pandemic having greatly reduced demand for air travel, there is something apt about a Leyland National 2 built for internal transport at a London airport living on as a mobile testing unit for Covid-19, even if it was retired from airside use long before the deadly virus reached British shores. B362 LOY was new to British Airways in September 1984 numbered BU398. It was one of six bought then with Leyland TL11 engines, 33 seats and three doors (two nearside, one offside) for use at Gatwick. They were among the last 100 Leyland Nationals built before production ended in 1985 and the Workington factory tooled up to make its successor, the Lynx. Production began in 1971 with vehicle 00101, and production model Leyland National 2s started with 06652. This one was 07785, making it the 7,685th and ended with 07835, which was Halton Borough 33. |
