THE SURFACE ROUGHNESS OF A ROADBASE BELOW CONCRETE SURFACINGS AFFECTS THE BEARING CAPACITY OF THE PAVEMENT. MARKED ROUGHNESS KEEPS THE JOINT OPENING SMALL AND COUNTERACTS THE FORMATION OF BUNDLES OF CRACKS, AND ALSO IF THE BOND BETWEEN THE ROADBASE AND THE CONCRETE SURFACING IS NEGLECTED AND THERE IS SUFFICIENT ROUGHNESS, ADEQUATE SHEAR FORCE TRANSFER CAN TAKE PLACE. THIS NEGLECT OF THE BOND IN THE AREA OF THE JOINT WAS ESTABLISHED IN A FATIGUE TEST OF A PAVEMENT CONSISTING OF A HYDRAULICALLY BOUND ROADBASE AND A CONCRETE SURFACING, BUT BECAUSE OF THE ROUGHNESS OF THE HYDRAULICALLY BOUND BASE THIS HAD NO EFFECT ON BEARING CAPACITY. IN A STABILIZED SAND ROADBASE HAVING LITTLE SURFACE ROUGHNESS IT CAN BE ASSUMED THAT ONLY A WEAK BONDING ACTION IS PRESENT, ASSOCIATED WITH A REDUCED COOPERATIVE BEARING CAPACITY. THIS IMPORTANT QUESTION IS TO BE STUDIED. THE BEARING CAPACITY OF A CARRIAGEWAY SLAB CONSISTING OF A HYDRAULICALLY BOUND SAND ROADBASE AND CONCRETE SURFACING IS TO BE EXAMINED. |
