MODEL TESTS TO DETERMINE THE EFFECTS OF CRACKS IN THE ROADBASE ON THE BEARING CAPACITY OF CONCRETE SURFACINGS |

MEASUREMENTS ON SECTIONS OF ROAD IN OPERATION AND ASSOCIATED LABORATORY TESTS WERE UNDERTAKEN TO DETERMINE THE COOPERATIVE ACTION OF CEMENT-STABILISED ROADBASES. RESULTS OF THE EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH SHOW THAT THE PROVISION OF SUFFICIENTLY THICK, CEMENT-STABILISED ROADBASES REDUCES SETTLEMENT UNDER THE ACTION OF TRAFFIC LOADS, BECAUSE OF BETTER LOAD DISTRIBUTION. A THEORY WAS DEVELOPED FOR THE QUANTITATIVE DETERMINATION OF THE COOPERATIVE ACTION OF CONCRETE SURFACINGS, AND THIS HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO THE CONSIDERATION OF CRACKS IN THE CEMENT-STABILISED ROADBASE. TO CHECK THE CORRECTION FACTOR ADDITIONAL MODEL TESTS ARE REQUIRED, WHICH FACILITATE ACCURATE MEASUREMENT OF THE STRESSES AND THEIR COURSE. IT IS INTENDED TO CARRY OUT TESTS ON VARIOUS THREE LAYER SYSTEMS. STRAINS ARE BEING MEASURED BY MEANS OF STRAIN GAUGES. PROVISION OF SLOTS IN THE INDIVIDUAL LAYERS OF THE MODEL FACILITATES DETERMINATION OF THE COURSE OF STRESS AND MAKES COMPARISON WITH THE THEORY POSSIBLE. |
