TRAFFIC FLOW AT THE ENTRANCES OF AT-GRADE JUNCTIONS CAN BE UPSET BY LANE CHANGING MANOEUVRES FROM THE DRIVING LANE TO THE OVERTAKING LANE. THIS CAN BE AVOIDED BY THE PROVISION OF UNILATERAL LANE DEMARCATION, BUT THE EFFECTS OF THIS CANNOT BE ACCURATELY ASSESSED. IT CAN LEAD TO DRAWBACKS, I.E. THE FORMATION OF LINES OF VEHICLES AND A REDUCTION IN SPEED. FOR REASONS OF UNIFORMITY IT IS FELT THAT EITHER THIS MEASURE, IF IT IS USEFUL, OUGHT TO BE APPLIED TO ALL ENTRANCE AREAS, OR, PERHAPS ONLY AT THOSE ENTRANCES WHICH HAVE TURNED INTO ACCIDENT BLACK SPOTS BECAUSE OF LANE CHANGING ACCIDENTS. IT IS THEREFORE INTENDED TO UNDERTAKE BEFORE AND AFTER STUDIES TO DETERMINE CHANGES IN TRAFFIC FLOW AND ACCIDENT RATES BROUGHT ABOUT BY UNILATERAL DEMARCATION. |
