THE SELECTION OF TOWN PLANNING OR TRAFFIC PLANNING SCHEMES COULD TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE OVERALL EFFECT OF NOISE ON THE POPULATION. THERE EXIST VALUES WHICH COMBINE POPULATION SECTIONS WITH THE NOISE LEVEL TO WHICH THEY ARE SUBJECTED (EXPOSURE INDICES), BUT THEIR USE GIVES RISE TO THEORETICAL PROBLEMS. THERE ARE NO DECISION PARAMETERS FOR COMPARING SITUATIONS CONCERNING DIFFERENT INDIVIDUALS SUBJECTED TO VARYING EXPOSURE. THE CONVENTIONAL THEORETICAL APPROACH WILL BE USED TO STUDY PSYCHOSOCIOLOGICAL ASSUMPTIONS RELATING TO: (1) THE RELATIONS BETWEEN THE ATTITUDE OF THE COMMUNITY TOWARDS THE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT AND THE COMPOSITION AND STRUCTURE OF THE GROUPS OR THEIR REPRESENTATIVES; (2) THE SENSITIVITY OF THE GROUPS TO THE SITUATION OF SMALLER PARTS OF THE GROUP SUFFERING FROM THE BIGGEST EXPOSURE. IF THE OPPORTUNITY ARISES, A COMPARISON WILL BE MADE OF THE ACOUSTIC ENVIRONMENT OF TWO DIFFERENT TOWNS, AND OF TWO DIFFERENT TRAFFIC SCHEMES FOR THE SAME TOWN. THE RESULTS WILL BE USED TO ASSESS THE USEFULNESS AND SIGNIFICANCE OF EXISTING EXPOSURE INDICES. |
