IN 1976 AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF LEGIBILITY DISTANCE FOR MESSAGES TRANSMITTED BY VARIOUS MODELS OF VARIABLE TRAFFIC SIGNS WAS CONDUCTED AND FACILITATED THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A METHODOLOGY FOR THE EVALUATION OF THE PERFORMANCE OF TRAFFIC SIGNS. IT IS PROPOSED TO CONTINUE THIS INVESTIGATION TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION DAYLIGHT CONDITIONS SO THAT THE STUDY CAN BE COMPLETED. THE LEGIBILITY DISTANCE MEASUREMENTS WILL BE MADE ON AN OPEN TRACK WHERE OBSERVERS WILL BE DRIVEN INSIDE A VEHICLE SO AS TO CREATE CONDITIONS AS NEAR AS POSSIBLE TO A NORMAL DRIVING SITUATION. A LIMITED NUMBER OF PANELS REPRESENTATIVE OF CERTAIN TYPES AND AVAILABLE EQUIPMENT, WILL BE STUDIED AND THEIR PERFORMANCE COMPARED WITH THAT OF A CONTROL PANEL. THE AIM IS TO DEFINE A NUMERICAL CRITERION FOR CLASSIFYING THE EQUIPMENT COMPARED. |
