The Coatings and Corrosion Laboratory at Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center of Federal Highway Administration will start an in-house corrosion study to identify the most cost effective corrosion resistant reinforcing steel(s) for bridge structures in October 2008. In this study, 11 types of materials, including conventional black bar, will be tested in 7 large concrete slab specimens (7 ft. long x 1.5 ft. wide x 8 in. deep each). Accelerated corrosion testing will be performed with a 7-day cyclic wet and dry exposure condition. Corrosion performance of each bar material will be evaluated in terms of macro-cell current, corrosion rate, corrosion potential, impedance, and autopsy upon completion of testing. |
