This project will develop an innovative platform independent non-contact scour monitoring technique for railroad bridges. This includes developing methodologies and mathematical models for georeferencing and refraction correction to use green laser system on a static or mobile platforms like truck and UAS (Unmanned Aerial Systems) for railroad bridges over waterways. This project is likely to make scour mapping feasible, quick, safe and economical for railroad bridge owners.
The primary objectives of this research project are: 1) Study the feasibility of using green laser for scour monitoring under varying turbidity conditions, 2) Develop a procedure to apply refraction correction model for varying turbidity conditions from a static and mobile platform 3) Perform lab experiments to obtain the scour hole dimensions using green laser under varying levels of water turbidity and 4) Perform experiments in the field to map the waterway/canal bed levels and the scour profile under the bridge piers. |
