Transportation connects citizens to services and their surrounding communities. In Massachusetts (MA), vulnerable populations, particularly older adults, face barriers accessing public transit. However, seniors aged 65 and older are eligible for reduced fare CharlieCard designations for use on local public transit through the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA). The following study will investigate the MBTAs reduced fare Senior CharlieCard application and signup event processes. Through ethnography, participant observation, and stakeholder focus groups/interviews, the following study will gain an understanding of the current processes involved in applying for a reduced fare CharlieCard and hosting sign-up events, document state-wide service provider and stakeholder attitudes, knowledge, and beliefs about the current processes and event training curriculum, and generate recommendations for near-term process improvements and long-term considerations for MBTAs Automated Fare Collection 2.0 (AFC 2.0) project and future intelligent transportation system (ITS) projects. |
