On suburban and urban roadways, recurring traffic congestion increases delays, makes travel times unreliable, and results in more crashes. Traditional capacity improvement projects involving roadway widening or bypasses may take several years to design, fund, and build, and in the long-term may increase travel demand for the corridor. The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has begun a highly successful Operational Improvement Program to rapidly identify and address these needs. The program looks for quick fix solutions with lower costs (typically less than $1 million), such as turn lane extensions, minor ITS deployments, and restriping. Projects are sought which have near-term implementation schedules of less than one year. |
