In infrastructure projects, replacement and deposition of sulfide soils requires long transports to landfills, which currently lack alternatives. This project aims to introduce new handling alternatives to increase the possibility of reuse or to deposit soils locally. This would reduce costs (e.g. handling costs can be reduced by 500-1000 SEK per ton). Transport distance and the related CO2 emissions could be brought down to < 50 %. In respect of the > 100,000 tons handled annually, this reduction have a high economic and environmental potential. The actors in the project are Trafikverket (Swedish Transport Administration), Dva DAC, Skellefte Municipality, Swerock, Lule University of Technology, Rambll and Ecoloop. The main parts of this work are; 1) Classification of sulfide soils based on acidification potential, rate. 2) Study two detailed applications for the use of sulfide soils with regard to practical, environmental and geotechnical properties and environmental system perspective. 3) Demonstrate the use of the classification on two full-scale alternative management options 4) Communicate and discuss the results with the key actors and stakeholders, environmental authorities included, in order to present scenarios allowing increased reuse and local deposition. |
