The purpose of the project proposal is to measure readability of permanent road signs in order to provide recommendations on the correct clases of retroreflection. The recommendations aim at maximizing the desired effects in terms of good visibility and readability, as well as minimizing negative effects of too low and too high retroreflection. Furthermore, younger drivers with full eyesight and older drivers will be compared. The results will also answer how well the new reflective sheets affect readability, as well as how the driver's subjective perceptions relate to the properties of the reflective films. Finally, the degree of reduced retroreflection as a function of age, wear and contamination should be considered in the recommendations. The project is delimited to include: road signs with class RA2 and RA3B reflex film; comparison between new signs and signs where time-related reduction in retroreflexion (maximum around 10%) is simulated with neutral filters; ground-mounted normal-sized road signs mounted on the pole to the right of the road; driving in the dark on the street or road without stationary lighting; driving with full and dipped beam; younger drivers with full vision and elderly drivers: objective measurements of readability, measured in distance; as well as subjective estimates of visibility, readability and glare; test implementation on separated area; evaluation of current requirements in VGU in relation to the results of the study; recommendations based on evaluation; driving with one and the same car with known light image. |
