The need for sustainable infrastructure is increasingly evident and resilience has been recognized as an essential part of sustainability. The goal of this study is to assess to what extent existing guidance for sustainable and resilient infrastructure design is appropriate for use with underground transportation infrastructure. Based on this assessment, recommendations will be made for subsequent enhancements. At the outset of the project, the two frameworks of greatest interest are Envision (Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure) and the Federal Highway Administration's (FHWAs) Climate Change & Extreme Weather Vulnerability Assessment Framework.
The study is divided into three phases: (1) review and assessment of existing frameworks, (2) engaging stakeholders to prioritize needs, and (3) developing draft specifications for departments of transportation (DOTs) or draft guidelines to be incorporated in tools such as Envision and FHWA framework.
The outcomes of this project will help local and national stakeholders take a unified approach to natural disasters, adapt to the effects of climate change, and satisfy the various requirements of sustainability (environmental, social, and economic). This goal is in line with the objectives of the UTC-UTI and the broader goal of Improving the durability and extending the life of transportation infrastructure set by US DOT. |
