The purpose of the project is to investigate and compare how different types of collaborative arrangements may enhance possibilities and incentives for improved efficiency and innovation in complex projects with considerable risk and uncertainty. Four types of collaborative arrangements will be investigated, described and compared: 1) partnering in design-build contracts, 2) early contractor involvement (ECI) based on consultancy contracts during design stage, and 3) long-term integrated contracts based on design-build-maintain (DBM) contracts and 4) design-build-finance-maintain (DBFM) contracts. The three first types are investigated in Sweden and the fourth type, which is a type of PPP-contract that includes financing, is investigated in the Netherlands. In total, 8-10 construction projects will be investigated and compared. Data collection is done mainly by qualitative methods wherein about 4-10 interviews with clients and contractors from each construction project will be the main source of knowledge. The project is connected to and part of other ongoing studies within ProcSIBEs and Trafikverket's joint research program, mostly the sub-studies "Qualitative evaluation of design-bid-build projects and performance contracts" and "Qualitative evaluation of collaborative arrangements". The project is also a part of a ITF WG research agenda. |
