The political transport goals together with a general opinion that the Inland Water Way (IWW) provides a major potential in transport capacity and thereby a relief of the transport infrastructure on land should open the scene for development and instalment of a modern, efficient and though through transport system on the inland waterways. Most clearly this potential benefit may be observed in and around lake Mlaren and the Stockholm region. The initiating point for this project will hence be this region and its particulars such as the specific infrastructure, routes, climate etc). The project aims to present generic results possible to translate, either directly or with some revisions, to other Swedish (or similar international) IWW regions. One clearly identified obstacle for the realisation and development of the IWW are uncertainties around the winter traffic and associated weather conditions. This project aims to identify, prioritize and address topics related to waterborne traffic on lake Mlaren. The project should clarify the actual winter conditions in the selected region and this will then form the basis for the load estimates acting on the hull and for which it should be designed for. Present ice-load models will be evaluated and the most suitable for our needs will be adopted/calibrated for IWW traffic. The project will provide an overview of suitable ship systems that may provide a rational IWW transport system and identify relevant scantling rules for these ships. Furthermore the project aims to analyse suitable hull, shapes, structural arrangement and hull materials. The project will not develop or write regulations adopted for IWW but rather intend to, at its best, support other stakeholders with developed models and developed knowledge for this purpose. |
